Shinshu Karuizawa French Restaurant TOEDA
In Vol. 1 of our special feature "Walking around Karuizawa," we introduce French restaurant "TOEDA," recommended by our museum's chairman, Yasushi Ando. Even among the many French restaurants in Karuizawa, this popular restaurant is often difficult to book. Located in a private house in a secret location in Nakakaruizawa, TOEDA offers a soothing, natural atmosphere that's characteristic of Karuizawa, with the sounds of the nearby river awaiting. Named after chef Tadataka Toeda, the restaurant opened in 2011 and underwent renovations in 2018. Chef Toeda's sophisticated dishes, both visually stunning and exquisite, are created by his skilled chef using carefully selected ingredients from all over Japan, primarily from Shinshu.
For both lunch and dinner, a "Chef's Choice" course consisting of around 10 dishes is served. There is a selection of around 100 types of wine, mainly French but also Nagano-produced. Wine pairings are also available to match the dishes, allowing you to enjoy the best food and drinks that Restaurant TOEDA offers each season. We hope you will enjoy the world of Chef Toeda's cuisine, artistically expressed on each and every plate, in the natural atmosphere of Karuizawa, while enjoying the atmosphere.

Tadataka Toeda
He started working at a French restaurant in Shiga Prefecture before moving to Tokyo. At the age of 22, he moved to France and trained under Jean-Paul Genet (★★), Georges Blanc (★★★), and Régis Marcon (★★★). After returning to Japan, he worked at renowned restaurants in Osaka, Tokyo, and Karuizawa before opening his own restaurant. In 2021, he will represent Japan at the world's most prestigious culinary competition, Bocure d'or, to be held in Lyon, France.
