Karuizawa Mampei Hotel Cafe Terrace

In Vol. 03 of the special feature "Walking in Karuizawa," we introduce the Mampei Hotel Cafe Terrace, a cafe recommended by our museum curators, and the walking path from the hotel to the cafe. Mampei Hotel is about a three-minute drive north from Karuizawa Ando Museum of Art, and the walking path winds through the trees, bathed in sunlight, offering a pleasant view of the refreshing nature that is so characteristic of Karuizawa.
Founded in 1894, the historic Mampei Hotel is known for being beloved by many literary figures, including Yukio Mishima, Tatsuo Hori, Yasunari Kawabata, and Ryunosuke Akutagawa. Records suggest that Tsuguharu Foujita also once visited the hotel, and through Foujita, our hotel has a connection with the hotel. One particularly famous person with a deep connection to the cafe terrace is John Lennon. From 1976 to 1979, John Lennon and Yoko Ono stayed here every year. The apple pie, made according to a traditional recipe that John enjoyed at their beloved cafe, is made with plenty of Shinshu-grown red apples and baked to perfection. The royal milk tea is a must-try to accompany the apple pie. One day, John expressed a desire for royal milk tea. The kitchen staff, who didn't know what the drink was at the time, learned how to make it and served it to them. It has since become a staple on the menu. Other than apple pie, cakes are also delicious, and parfaits and puddings are also popular. After enjoying the museum, why not take a stroll along the path and visit the Mampei Hotel Cafe Terrace?
