Exhibition Overview
Throughout his life, Fujita worked on a great many "book projects," but here we will focus on Fujita and Japanese culture from our museum's illustrated book collection.
This exhibition features works such as "Japanese Folk Tales," which Fujita designed, translated, and edited; "Okiku-san" and "Oume ga Sanme no Haru," written by French author Pierre Loti about his stay in Japan; "Geisha no Uta," a French translation of a folk song sung by geisha in their tea rooms; and illustrations for "A Flower with a Thousand Golden Petals," which are characterized by Fujita's delicate brushwork and lovely use of color. Also included are "Sea Dragon," an 11-day travelogue of Japan by French artist Jean Cocteau, and other works that Fujita used to dig up memories of and depict Japanese culture in faraway lands.
